It takes and hopefully soon we will meet in 3D.
Just last weekend I was able to go to Siam conference
and seeing all friends in person
it was a pleasant experience.
So as I was mentioning in the casual conversation
before the start of the talk,
on the fly when they kindly invited me to jump in
on an opening, I decided to bring this topic
of climate change.
And so the first thing I want to say,
I'm just, I'm not fully involved in it.
I want to jump in, but I hope the talking points
throughout the talk will tell you why
I decided to bring in this topic, the timing of it
and the hope that this community also gets engaged
in the modeling of climate.
So already on slide one, there is a little bit
of an explanation of the why now.
So the left figure has North Texas,
the view of North Texas in February of this year
an unusual winter storm that had never been seen
in this part of the country.
And far down in the talk, I will highlight
one of the very recent papers where the connection
of the main driver of climate in Europe
may have a weakening of that may have something to do
with this unusual cold weather.
On the right-hand side, there is a picture
of the current comparison of temperatures
in the two month window, September,
June to September, 2021, compared to the last 30, 40 years
and red that the underlying is a lot of red.
So that's the warming compared
to historical average temperatures.
In the middle, it was refers a little bit of the time
about 10 years ago where I was, a group of us
applied mathematicians were more involved in a network
that was created, supported by the National Science
Foundation, where the whole idea at that time was something
like we will try to reenergize this.
Those of us who are not fully committed,
we're not doing the large scale scientific computing
can still learn and contribute.
In a similar way as we did, where were we
as we were grounded and the lessons learned
and that was a COVID experience.
So I highlight in this slide, three points.
One is, what we did when we were grounded
on the left, it reflects a little bit of an effort
with an undergrad student to study the COVID-19 in Texas.
