Welcome to this video on cognitive learning strategies.
When many students think about studying
they think about reading slides
highlighting texts
or listening to a lecture.
These are all ways of taking in information
but they are often quite passive.
In this video
we focus on cognitive learning strategies.
Cognitive strategies are mental operations you use to actively work with information
not just to look at it, but to transform it.
Using cognitive strategies means that you move from just reading to actively engaging
with the material.
Instead of only seeing words on a slide
your brain starts to organize
connect and explain
the content.
In this course
we will focus on three main types of cognitive strategies.
First
rehearsal
which includes different ways of repeating and practicing information
so that you can recall it later.
Second
organization
where you structure ideas
build overviews and show how concepts
are related.
And third
elaboration
where you link new content to what you already know
create examples
and explain ideas in your own words.
The overall goal of these strategies is simple.
They help you process information more deeply.
Deeper processing usually leads to better understanding
better memory and better transfer
of what you learn to new situations.
For example
to the exam
to your own teaching or to real life problems.
On the next slides
we will look at each of these three types in more detail and apply
them to real content from this course.
On this slide
we focus on the first group of cognitive strategies
rehearsal strategies.
Rehearsal simply means that you practice information so that you can recall it later.
It is especially useful for learning facts
