In this video we focus on resource management strategies.
So far we have looked at cognitive strategies
how you work with information and metacognitive
strategies
how you plan
monitor and evaluate your learning.
But even the best strategies will not work if your conditions for learning are very poor.
Resource management strategies help you manage your time
your learning environment
your
energy and effort and your social and digital resources such as other people and learning
tools.
The goal is to create realistic conditions so that your learning plans can actually work
in real life with jobs
family
hobbies and everything else you are dealing with.
A very helpful question is what do I need around me to learn well?
In the next slides we will look at practical strategies for time
environment
effort and
help seeking and we will build a simple weekly study plan for this course.
One of the most important resources you have as a student is time and it is also one of
the easiest to lose.
A very common pattern is I will study later
maybe on the weekend and then the weekend
is over and nothing has happened.
A more effective approach is to plan small regular study blocks.
For example instead of waiting for one big free afternoon you schedule 2 to 4 sessions
of 25 to 40 minutes each week.
Short focus blocks are often more realistic and just as effective
sometimes even more.
It is helpful to use your calendar as if these were real appointments.
You write down specific study slots with day
time and place.
For example Tuesday 6 to 6.30 pm library
module 1 memory.
For each block you also plan specific tasks
not just study psychology.
For example make a concept map about the different memory systems or write and answer 10 self-test
questions on self-regulated learning.
Finally you need to protect these slots.
That means that you sometimes say no to less important activities or you move other tasks
instead of always moving your learning.
Of course life is not perfect
things will come up
but if you protect at least some
of your plan slots you already support your learning much better than with vague intentions.
In the next slide we will look at another important resource
your learning environment
and distractions.
