FAU,Erlangen,Professor,Jörg,Schulze
My name is Jörg Schulze. I'm heading the chair on electron devices here at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität in Erlangen,Nürnberg.
And in parallel, I'm the managing director of the Fraunhofer Institute on integrated systems and device technology.
My field of research is, on the one hand side, semiconductor physics.
That means how to synthesize semiconductor crystals and how to tailor the electronic properties of those materials.
And the second part is semiconductor engineering, where I want to ask the question how to transform these materials,
these tailored materials, into electronic components, devices, chips, which then can be used in modern electronics.
The fascinating part of semiconductor engineering and technology is that you need both.
On the one hand side, you need a lot of quantum physics to really understand the electronic behavior of a semiconductor crystal itself.
And on the other hand side, to use the semiconductor crystal to turn it, for instance, into a semiconductor chip.
That is craft work, where you need a lot of machinery, a lot of engineering to fabricate, finally, the chip you can use in a laptop or in a computer, whatever.
And that is what, to my feeling, is the very fascinating part of my research.
What is my dream to achieve at FAU?
I want really to fund the School of Semiconductor Engineering and Technology itself to train students in this fascinating subject.
And on the other hand side, really to tune semiconductor engineering into quantum electronics.
What is our latest frontier?
Yeah, this is what I finally want to achieve.

Professor Jörg Schulze is Head of the Chair on Electron Devices at FAU and Managing Director of the Fraunhofer Institute on Integrated Systems and Device Technology. His field of research links knowledge from basic research, engineering skills and craftsmanship to develop semiconductor technology for the future. The professorship is funded as part of the High-Tech Agenda Bavaria (HTA). With this program, the government of the Free State of Bavaria is creating, among other things, 1,000 new professorships in key areas of the future such as artificial intelligence, clean tech and aerospace, thus strengthening Bavaria's leading position in research and teaching and promoting the development of new ideas and the latest technologies as well as their implementation in practice. #hightechagendabayern
