I grew up in Turkey in the 90s. As a child I was absorbing doubling ice cream prices
every summer and I was saving my little pocket money by converting it into dollars and Deutsche
Mark at the time. I became interested in these economic issues when I was a child and then
afterwards I decided to study economics. After I had my own family I became particularly
more interested in family economics. In my research I analyzed labor markets with the
perspective of gender and family. The questions such as how many kids to have, when to have
and how much to spend for them for toys and books and educational activities are part
of my research. I particularly analyzed whether people have kids in good or bad economic times
and whether these decisions depend on their job types or gender inequalities in childbearing.
I believe these questions are important as fertility rate is very low in many developed
economies and we need to develop effective policies and for that we need to understand
how people are deciding. In a world where gender inequality is still a concern I would
like to contribute to our understanding of gender and family by providing different perspectives.
And FAU is a good place to work with good resources and established system and friendly
working environment which are important pillars for a researcher to keep going.

Professor Sena Coskun's field of research lies at the intersection of the labor market and the family. There, she investigates how economic policy affects, for example, women's employment, families and family planning. These findings are intended to help shape policies that are more women- or family-friendly. Sena Coskun has been an assistant professor of Macroeconomics and Labor Market Research at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) since April 2022, in a joint position with the Institute for Employment Research (IAB).
