Good evening...A very warm welcome to everyone.
It is a great pleasure to welcome you here on behalf of the master program at Uni of
A 그다음에 and to한 the event of the graduation ceremony and the Honorary ceremony of the
academic year of 2019, 2020.
We are here in the old university library building.
Old means it was built in 1913.
And we can see in the room some sort of pictures and memories
of actually the founding generation.
We see Margaret Willem, Friedrich here,
who was the first founder, the first name for the university.
But I actually always think that the real founder
is Margaret Willemine, his wife who's there,
because I think she's there because she is the box person.
He was riding on a horse, and she was very much the arts,
the cultural, and the science person.
And the founding stone of the library of the university
was actually her library as well.
So this is why we create a different setting
than we sometimes are.
Especially, I would like to very warmly welcome our guest
speaker, former UN High Commissioner Dr. Navi Pillai,
who is here with us already for the second time.
Dr. Pillai was UN High Commissioner
for Human Rights in 2008 to 2014.
And among the many activities after leaving their office
is that she is a member of the advisory board
of the International Nürnberg Principals Academy.
We are very happy that we continue our close collaboration
with the academy in this regard.
And Navi Pillai will be introduced more properly
and thoroughly by Christopher Saffoling in just a moment.
Before we listen to Dr. Pillai, let
me just say a few words about the master program,
and then also award our graduation diplomas
to some of our recent graduates, at least those who are here
today.
The master program started in the wintertime of 2014, 2015.
So it's already the sixth year.
And we have, again, a great new group of students this year
from diverse professional and academic backgrounds,
coming, in fact, from all five continents this year.
We welcome students from Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil,
Colombia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Germany, Lebanon, Hong Kong,
India, Singapore, Turkey, and the United States.
So we're very proud and very privileged to welcome them here
at FAU.
The program has grown consistently.
We have now more than 100 students,
taking all the six years together, from 49 countries.
And that, of course, is by itself already a special treat

On Thursday, 17 October, at 6.15pm we will officially open the new academic year 2019/20 in the Old University Library’s lecture hall (Universitätsstraße 4, 91054 Erlangen). After a short ceremony for some of our recent graduates, we are very happy and honoured to welcome back Dr Navi Pillay, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and currently President of the Advisory Board of the International Nuremberg Principles Academy for a short lecture and discussions.
Dr Pillay, South African jurist and human rights activist, has a wealth of experience in the field, both nationally and internationally, having served as, among others, a defense attorney for anti-apartheid activists, the first non-white female judge in South Africa, and a judge on both the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court. She has also worked with a number of non-governmental organizations on issues relating to equality, women’s rights, children, detainees, victims of torture and of domestic violence, and a range of economic, social and cultural rights.
The ceremony includes a reception. The venue is wheelchair accessible.
