Hello everybody. My name is Katharina Herkindell. I'm a junior professor at the Chair of Energy
Process Engineering and I have the honor today to introduce the new master's program to you.
Which is held completely in English. It's called Clean Energy Processes here at FAU.
And of course we want to accept applications from all over the world. But of course it's also
directed at German speaking students because as you all know especially the fields of clean energy
and engineering and climate change are extremely connected globally and it's very international.
And if you want it or not no matter which career path you choose a fair share of your time you
will have to talk in English in the future. So maybe you want to get the vocabulary right away
already while you get your master's degree. Basically this course offers you a very profound
engineering education which is precisely built for the challenges of our time regarding the
climate crisis. Because we know the whole industry needs to change and specifically also the bio
industry and the chemical industry. And we need new technologies, we need new process chains,
we need new machines and as a whole society we need to change. We all know that. So we
developed this particular international program to give you exactly the tools that you need to
facilitate this change for these different industries. Here the clean energy processes
have a dual focus on these topics. For one the clean energy processes meaning if we want to shift
our whole technologies we actually need the energy for that. So we need to produce enough of the
amounts that we actually can charge up everything. So the one focus is on the production of enough of
the renewable energy and the second focus is on the processes themselves that need to change.
So we need to actually use the renewable energy and therefore adjust all the processes that we
already have or reinvent them completely. We need to rethink everything. So the structure of this
master's program we have assembled a really nice mix for you. You will have for one part compulsory
courses where you will learn the essentials regarding for example also ethics but everything
from process simulation, thin film processing and process engineering and so on. And then you will
have the choice between two specializations. Either you choose the energy technologies
where you will be a bit more with the heavy machines and the pure engineering or you will
focus on the energy systems where you go more in the underlying mechanisms. And you will also all
learn about the socio-economic aspects and actually the social impacts of all these topics.
And then you'll have also a very large catalogue to choose from elective modules where you can go
perfectly after your own interests if it's life cycle assessment or economics or more engineering
or more natural sciences. We are on the go to assemble very nice choices for you. Then of course
unique about this course of study is that it will be completely in English and that you will not
only get the technology but also the socio-economic aspects. So you will get the whole package. And of
course Erlangen and Nürnberg are very great places to live and it's a beautiful university
and a nice place to study. But also among this English speaking students you will find nice peers
and form a great network and also be very close to the professors where we have 10 involved
professors which are very research focused and very focused on renewable energies anywhere from
nanotechnology to new materials to new processes. And it will be very very inspiring also. Also we
have close links to the industry of course and what is a very big plus in this course of study
is that the Helmholtz Center for Renewable Energies is closely involved which is also situated in
Erlangen. They focus on sustainable chemical production and they are also involved in the
curriculum. As I already said we'll have a lot of new specifically designed courses and new
practical courses also. And what interests you most maybe also the job prospects. I think I don't have
to say a lot about it because it's pretty clear we will give you this degree for all the jobs we
really need in the future. So you can go into classical energy production and logistics because
we will need a lot of engineers there. You can go worldwide into the process engineering optimization
and intensification and of course you can also take a job in consulting for example. What would
also be very nice if you would join the classical chemical and bio companies the huge ones and make
them more sustainable from the inside. And of course also if you want to go into politics go
ahead we need everybody. And maybe one or other of you will also consider to do a PhD and then we
