This lecture provides firt an overview of relevant mutlicore processors used in HPC. It further introduces two basic classification schemes for parallel computers (Flynn vs. Memory organisation). In a final step we start with the class of shared memory architectures and discuss the baisc concept of the two dominating architecture lines (UMA and ccNUMA).
