Dear people interested in the Ariadne program at the University Erlangen-Nürnberg, Ariadne
Technat is the career mentoring program for female students, doctoral candidates, postdoctoral
researchers and junior professors at the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Sciences.
In this webcast, we'd like to give you a brief overview on the program.
First we'd like to explain the concept of Ariadne and the background of why the program
was designed.
Then you will hear about its structure and content and you might also be interested in
learning something about the admission requirements and the admission procedure.
The idea of mentoring in general is very old.
For the ancient model of mentoring we have to go back to Greek mythology.
Odysseus went to fight the Trojan War and entrusted the care of his son Telemachus to
an older and wiser friend called Mentor.
And Telemachus and Mentor developed a very strong relationship built on the foundation
of guidance and support.
And today the word mentor has become synonymous with teacher, counselor, coach, facilitator,
motivator and friend.
Since the 1970s the instrument spread in the United States job market with a focus on career
mentorship and problems which bearing non-dominant groups from professional success.
Since the 1980s mentoring was established at European universities primarily for the
promotion of women in academia.
And today mentoring is part of human resources development at many universities including
FAU.
The mentoring program of the University Erlangen-Nürnberg is Ariadne.
It started in 2003 at the faculty of engineering and is currently part of the target agreements
for increasing the proportion of women in science which are concluded between university
executive and every single faculty.
And the goal of Ariadne is to support excellent young female researchers of FAU who aspire
to an academic career from student to junior professor.
The special thing about the mentoring program at FAU is that Ariadne is not one overall
mentoring program for the university but is offered in a faculty specific matter.
Ariadne Technat is the joint mentoring program for the faculty of sciences and the faculty
of engineering.
And then there are three partner programs Ariadne Revy for the faculty of business economics
and law, Ariadne Mead for the faculty of medicine and the university hospital and Ariadne Phil
for the faculty of humanities, social science and theology.
And there are clear advantages for the participants from the separation according to faculties.
Firstly each program can be tailored to the individual needs of the mentees for example
the design of the workshop program and secondly there are communalities among the mentees.
So the menchi group consists of people from your faculty.
But Ariadne Technat is not only specific for the faculty of engineering and the faculty
of sciences but also comes in qualification specific program lines.
There is a separate program for master students and students with state examination degree
which runs for nine months and there is a single program for doctoral candidates, postdocs
and junior professors which runs for 18 months.
And in this program line postdocs and junior professors get extra training on specific
topics.
For example we offer a workshop on professorial appointment procedures.
And since 2020 the communication and event language is English to give our international
students and researchers full access to the program.
Before I go into more detail on the design and content of Ariadne Technat I'd like to
