So I would like you to give you the usual thing, an overview of what we're going to do in the course.
So today we've already started admin motivation, all those kind of things we've already done.
What I would like to... Oh yes, find out what you already know.
Who of you thinks they don't have the prerequisites I've mentioned an hour ago?
Okay. That's okay.
Most of you who've raised their hands, shyly, have a neighbor who didn't.
Okay. There's an opportunity there.
Okay. Let me give you two more cheap advice things.
One I've already told you, make study groups.
It's actually much more fun, much more effective for learning.
We're social animals and they learn best when they do it in a group.
This kind of stereotype of people learning by sitting at their desk and thinking hard
is one of the most wrong things you can do.
It's wrong for learning as a student.
You learn much better when you're actually going for a walk, talking to your friends,
because that actually brings blood into your brain.
It's also wrong for research.
Research doesn't happen when some hyper-intelligent person sits alone in his room or her room and thinks hard.
Research happens when two or three hyper-intelligent people walk up to a blackboard or a whiteboard
and bash their heads with lots of good ideas and shooting slightly less good ideas down
and at the end coming up with better ideas.
That's what happens.
Make a study group.
The second one may surprise you.
Learn to touch type.
Who of you can touch type?
What that I mean is type without looking at the keyboard.
But not System Eagle.
You know what System Eagle is?
Circle and Pounce.
There's a variant of System Eagle, which is System Double Eagle,
which probably most of you did, do.
Touch typing, with what I mean is you can actually use a dish towel, put it over your hands, and still type in full speed.
OK?
If you can do that, you're well done.
If not, take a week.
An hour a week is all you need.
There are wonderful typing tutors.
And you'll be, after a week, you'll be faster than you're now.
Imagine your life. Almost all of you are going to spend more than half of your working life typing.
And if you only have a 10% speed increase, that gives you, from half an hour per day to two hours a day, more free time.
OK?
That is an investment very, very, very much worth taking.
I know there's never really time.
But while we're talking about admin in AI, which is kind of blocks a week, and general blah blah, you have time to learn to touch type.
Probably the most important career advice you're ever going to get in your studies.
I attribute 10% of my academic success to the fact that I can touch type.
I can do certain things faster than other people, which leaves me time to think.
Or brush my teeth or whatever, but to think mostly.
OK?
