First, just a few words of thanks to all of you for coming.

First of all, thank you very much.

For the wonderful speakers today, it's a great honor and pleasure to hear from all of you.

I'm humbled to be named as part of this lectureship of this, Jakob Hertz, who I've learned a lot

about over this period of time.

And I'm honored and humbled to be named as part of his legacy.

And he's such a pioneer that I feel a part of this whole ceremony.

It makes me very proud.

I also am very proud of the university.

This is a forward thinking and thoughtful, daring university to move forward over these

years on these important topics.

The city of Erlangen and their courage and forthrightfulness in honoring what should

be honored and continues to need to be honored is very important.

I'm proud to be here in the city at this time.

I'm also particularly grateful, it's been mentioned several times, that I was able to

have several students, fellows, early in their careers spend time with me in the laboratory.

Obviously, starting with Jurgen Winkler as early as 1992 and then two of his young fellows

that followed in his footsteps, Chi-Chung Lee and Beata Wiener, who more recently has

returned to Erlangen.

All this makes me actually quite emotional and proud to be a part of that.

What's wonderful too is even students of Beata and Jurgen and Chi-Chung have come to spend

periods of up to a year in my lab helping us learning.

And I feel quite attached to FAU.

And I'm very proud to be here.

Finally but not last, I have to thank my wife.

I should tell you that it's not just, those of you that have worked in my lab and there's

actually several of you here, realize that she's not just my companion and my wife and

my best friend, but she's also a scientific editor.

So she's taught many people in my lab how to write scientifically and continues to edit

our manuscripts.

So I get her free work there.

She works on the outside, but she also edits our manuscripts and grants.

So for that, thank you very much.

Now I'm going to talk to you about, I was asked to present some science.

And I'm going to tell you, if I can remember what my password is.

Since I do work in memory, this should work.

Close this off.

And start with this.

A little signal should be coming up soon.

Okay.

So I'm going to talk, I'm going to give you two topics.

I'm not going to make too many assumptions about your background knowledge.

And I won't go into too much depth, but I will give you a little bit of update on this

concept of adult neurogenesis.

In particular, something about what we know now about what it does.

I'm going to tell you a little bit about what we think its function is and why we have this

process going on in our brain.

And then I'm going to give you a little test.

And that test is a way for you to get a sense of how your brain is functioning when these

brain cells are active.
