The overview of DMIP, diagnostic medical image processing.
In summer semester, and this is a good way
to advertise what we are going to see in summer,
we will learn about IMIP.
And the idea of these two lectures is the following.
In the winter semester, we talk about diagnostic
medical image processing techniques.
That means we deal with the systems that are used
for diagnostic purposes.
So the patient visits the radiology department,
images are captured, these images are prepared
by technicians, and then the doctor sits
and analyzes the images and decides what to do.
In the interventional environment,
things are completely different.
These systems are used during surgery or interventions.
That means the patient is on the table,
the patient is treated, and the doctor needs
image information to guide the procedure,
or to run the overall procedure.
So there are completely different demands
with respect to the image processing modules.
For instance, in terms of reliability,
so the system should work all the time,
it should be easy to operate, because you know
you have your gloves and the bloody fingers,
that's the picture you should have in mind,
and then you have to manipulate the images.
The systems have to be efficient and fast,
something that is not that important
in diagnostic medical image processing,
because you have some time to do computations
to prepare the pictures.
So these are the two worlds we are actually in.
And in winter semester, first we started out
with different modalities, and I have to say
that this year, I made this chapter much shorter
than in previous years.
Usually I spend two weeks where I explain
all the modalities and the physics underlying
these imaging modalities, but that's something
that I have shifted completely to the basic lecture
in the first semester on medical engineering,
that is basically on medical imaging.
And I give here just a rough idea.
So I think it's more than sufficient for the understanding
of the subsequent sections, so I consider you
a little bit on a more advanced level.
And which modalities do we know?
We all should now be able to look at an image
