So unfortunately, compared to the winter semester lecture, we don't have a nice storyline.

I'm just reconsider the whole lecture here.

And we started now out with magnetic navigation, and now we will look into a completely different

modality.

So we will look into a modality that we haven't considered in winter semester at all, and

it's ultrasound.

We will talk about 3D ultrasound and 3D imaging capabilities of ultrasound devices.

That's an extremely emerging field.

In the last five years, things have changed tremendously.

In hospitals, more and more 3D ultrasound devices are used.

And the core idea of building a 3D ultrasound device is, again, relying on smart algorithms.

So image processing algorithms drive also the innovation in this field.

Do you have an idea why ultrasound is such a preferred imaging technology?

Well, that depends on which company you decide for.

It's usually not that expensive.

You have no ionizations like you have with x-rays, so it doesn't hurt the body.

You can make tons of ultrasound images and nothing happens.

And that's the major reason.

It's very easy to use, at least to apply.

To analyze the images is a completely different story.

I remember when I was at my local doctor here and he did an ultrasound.

It was a device from World War II or something like that.

And I just saw some black and white noise.

And this guy was reading out some information of it.

So it requires some experience to analyze the ultrasound images because the image quality

is not comparable to what we get today with CT.

But for an initial diagnosis, that's more than sufficient.

Ultrasound devices are heavily used.

For instance, if somebody has some problems with the carotid artery, carotid artery, that's

the artery here.

You feel it if you touch your neck.

You just take your ultrasound probe.

That's the ultrasound head.

It's called ultrasound probe.

You put it here.

And then you can study, you know, whether there are calcifications by just looking at

the ultrasound images.

You can also study the blood flow using the Doppler effect that you know from physics.

If you have a Bavarian Abitur, you have heard about this.

You might have heard about this.

Times have changed.

I know that.

Where it's also ultrasound users, if your girlfriend, your wife, or whoever, or yourself,

expect a baby, it's heavily used.

And also their 3D is very emerging technology because parents, upcoming parents, they like

to see their baby in 3D.

They all look the same, by the way.

So it might be a good trick.

I mean, you can charge additional money if you have the 3D images.

So for some doctors that are here in Erlangen or around Erlangen, they can store just a
