Okay, so good afternoon.

Good afternoon.

I'm a professor in analysis in the University of Brazilia, which is the capital of the

country.

I'm actually very much in this joy algorithm that I like to show that, you know, Martin did the video in which you have a country and then you realize you better have a capital right in the middle of the country in order to better serve the citizens.

So it's a very modern city.

She's, and then, of course, one of the main universities of Brazil is located at the public University of Brazilia.

And Jacqueline has been there for a number of years now.

So Jacqueline has a very international career.

She's an expert in international equations. You can have a look in the Google Explorer and then you will see the topics of interest related to dynamic international equations in measured spaces with delays, impulsions, in time scales, and several other keywords.

She's a president of the Brazilian Mathematical Society, which has also a long tradition and is gathering activities of all the mathematical community, coordinating all the activities of the mathematical community in Brazil.

That plays also a very international role, while certainly Brazil, together with other countries, but by size is one of the main drivers of mathematical research in the whole Latin America and worldwide.

She has had a number of prizes, awards, and you will see that she got the Laurean Prize for Human Science.

She has also a Humboldt Award, so she's a Humboldtian, as many of you are.

She was visited us a couple of years ago. She was happy to help us on organizing the workshop of next week. I would say that she's the main responsible that that workshop takes place.

She's been the main organizer together with Celestia, who cannot be today, thanks for the family resource.

So she will be here in two weeks. So I invite you to take the opportunity to talk to her and collaborate with her during these two weeks.

And of course, Jacqueline has also been a very inspiring person for the whole community of the mathematical sciences, in particular in topics related with diversity, cultural diversity, biodiversity, and ethnic diversity is certainly one of the key

defining features of the country of Brazil. So she has been always a role model also on the dissemination of mathematics and inspiring young people, minorities to join the mathematical move.

From the mathematics of data research center from the very beginning, we advertise these topics of gender and diversity as being some of our priorities.

And we are delighted that this time Jacqueline accepted to start a new dynamics, a new type of lectures within our mode lectures.

But instead of focusing on a very highly specialized topic, telling us about this very important but difficult issue of gender equity in mathematics. So thank you Jacqueline.

Thank you very much for the introduction. It's my great pleasure to be here and to be able to talk about this issue. And it's the first time that I will talk about this topic with the audience in majority of men.

And so it's very nice. I think really it's really good to see that there are many men here today to listen about this important topic.

So I was talking a little about what we call it as gender technology. We have a psychologist called Valerica Zavello. She works and she researched a lot about gender.

And then she realized that we have a lot of gender technologies that create bias and also take us in some direction that's not like that cannot improve ourself in some direction.

So for example, here the gender technology could be toys. So when you see about the childhood, we can see that there are differences when you are a child.

The way that you treat men and the way that you treat women. So this is very complicated and this creates differences when you are a child.

And it's the moment that you are learning the basic things in your life. So here you could do some research in the Google and try to write like toys for girls.

You will see that the toys that appears are things about the beauty and also about taking care of others or taking care of family.

So it's always related to that. Usually when you go to some toy story, usually they ask, oh, are you looking for some toys for girls or boys?

But it's completely nonsense because they are kids. So that's the moment to stimulate different capabilities.

So you don't know the ones that each one will be more like inspired to do.

But we can see that we have this type of gender technologies that when you are a child, you are stimulated in a different way.

Also here, if you look for toys for boys, you can see that it's completely different.

So you can have much more things that you can think about it like logic things and using other other types of stimulation.

So here is something that is very important to be addressed because we created these different environments for the children.

So here we have that the gender technologies could be much more than only toys, for example, music, also cartoons, also movies, many things.

You can create such a type of gender stereotypes and also the bias. And this is very complicated.

So it's very important to us to think for the children how we are to stimulate them and about these things that we are like given to them to consuming all the time.

So here is a paper that was published in Science and that brings a very interesting research concerning the children.

So here there were like 200 girls and 200 boys and the average age of these girls and boys was around five and seven years old.

And then the idea was to relate the intelligence and gender.

So when the children were like with age of age five years old, so they asked like they tell them a story about someone that was very intelligent and smart and asked to the children.

Oh, do you think this is a man or this is a woman? And if it's a girl, the girl said a woman and if it's a man, if it was a boy, the boy said, I think that's a man.

But after perception changed after six years old. So the same question was made for the children when they have six years old.

And then the perception was completely different. So the girls answered that the smart and intelligent person would be a man and they say the boys, the boys associate the smart and intelligent person as a boy, as a man.

So if you see here, we have these bias that we create here in this situation. You can see like the changes that the gender technologies can create in the girls and in the boys.

And this is very worried situation. Yeah. So because we are creating something that it's not it's not realistic. It's only perception and bias and the stereotype.

So it's very important to reflect about that.

FAU MoD Lecture: Promoting Gender Equity in Mathematics: Strategies and Solutions
Speaker: Prof. Dr. Jaqueline Godoy Mesquita
Affiliation: UnB, University of Brasília | SBM, President of the Brazilian Mathematical Society (Brazil)

Abstract. In this talk, I will explore the gender gap in mathematics, highlighting regional differences and examining the underlying causes of this disparity. We will delve into initiatives aimed at increasing the representation of women in mathematics and discuss strategies to combat bias within the field. Additionally, I will outline various opportunities available to women in mathematics, emphasizing the importance of fostering an inclusive environment that supports their growth and success.
