So
this HPC Cafe is about how to get computing resources in Germany and Europe from the point
of view of you
scientists
who need resources that exceed what is at your disposal on your
desk, for example, on your laptop.
So we are three presenters today
myself
Helmut Brüchle from ELRZ
he will present
remotely and Harald Köstler
he will tell us something about the highest level of HPC
that you can get in Europe.
This is Euro HPC.
Okay, so let's start.
First of all, I'd like to show you the HPC supply pyramid.
We've been using this image since the dawn of time, so to speak.
We imagine the resources that exist for HPC in Europe to be organized like in a pyramid.
At the base of the pyramid, we have the so-called tier three systems, the local clusters, so
that starts basically at your desktop.
Anything you have at your disposal right away or with a very low entry barrier
for example
your department cluster, your group cluster, your local computing center.
So usually these resources are accessible without further ado.
Maybe you have to provide some kind of proposal, maybe not, but it's usually low barrier.
The next level is what we call tier two.
This is where the NHR supply area starts.
NHR stands for National High Performance Computing.
It's an initiative founded a few years ago since 2021
which provides a kind of medium
level of supply for HPC all over Germany.
So I'll come to that in a second.
Third level is tier one.
So these are the German national centers.
Basically these are organized in the Gauss Center for Supercomputing, GCS, and the top
tier is tier zero, the European centers, which are available all over Europe.
So this European level is called Euro HPC or Euro HPC Joint Undertaking.
It's a legal and funding entity in Europe and its funding is 7 billion euros from 2021
to 27.
So that's a significant amount of money, but there are also some, it's just more than one
country involved.
So that money gets distributed.
The Gauss Center for Supercomputing is the union of the three centers at Jülich, Garching
and Stuttgart.
So the ones that are actual federal German computing centers, and they have their own
process for application and compute time granting.
And I'll come to that.
Actually Helmut will come to that when it's his turn.
And then finally NHR.
It's a coordinate network of national high performance computing centers funded by the

Abstract:
If you are user of HPC systems, chances are that your demand will sooner or later outgrow the resources at your disposal. In this HPC Cafe we will show you what resources you can apply for in Germany an Europe and what the prerequisites are for getting computing time at larger centers. We will cover the local supply at NHR@FAU, the Tier-2 systems of the NHR Alliance, the Tier-1 Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (GCS), and Tier-0 EuroHPC systems.
