i'm michael and i'm happy to be back in beautiful franconia after two
years in cold northern norway the middle norway actually so yes as you
mentioned i'm started at a public university or what not but two
months ago so we're just in the buildup phase of our research group
there but i also have a second head on my head that that's probably
whether it's five t-shirt is on so also the charity was five academia
and trading special interest groups so where we collect information
about risk five and teaching so we're not providing teaching
materials scripted ourselves but we want to yeah encourage researchers
and teachers around the world to contribute materials that can be
used for teaching and risk five so if you are teach during a course
where you want to use risk five in computer architecture and operating
systems and compilers whatever you think you can use material you can
mix and match material under open licenses like creative commons
licenses and yeah just save a bit of work and yeah also make use of
reviewed materials so enough of the advert basement so today i brought
you just a bit of horror experiences with the risk five architecture so
we started to well investigating was five ma bit more than two years ago
in trondheim was had my students when i was looking for projects for
the students to do and was asking around what would they be interest
didn't they all heard about oh there's this new computer
architecture out there because we always heard about mips and arm and
that's so old fashioned and of course nobody wants to x eighty six
and so can we do something about this and said yes let's start with
some well research oriented teaching projects so we have something like a
research seminar slash project which is the preliminary phase for the
buses in trondheim and here i was especially interested in the
hardware software interface so what are the difficulties of getting
system software so everything that runs on bare metal drummer risk life

and bringing up this new architecture how can we get this to
work and can we get this to work and that's what i want to bring you
today so what's risk five so i guess most of you i've heard about risk
five already and yesterday was the twelfth anniversary of risk five so
congratulations to our colleagues in berkeley so risk five started us as
an idea for a new processor architecture developed in the
parallel computing lab at the university of california at berkeley
since two thousand and ten so our colleague across a sandwich was
looking for a new architecture that could not only be used in teaching
but also in research and would also be useful for industry and if you
had participated in computer architecture courses couple of years
ago probably you've got an introduction about yeah this is
