I'm Vignamin Morgenstern, I'm a professor for signal processing in machine learning.

I work at the Institute for Multimedia Communication and Signal Processing that is a part of the

electrical engineering department at VAL.

I work on algorithms that have to do with large datasets and I'm interested in processing

those large datasets and in learning from those datasets.

I can give two examples.

One example is from microscopy.

Imagine you're trying to study processes that happen inside human cells.

Conventional microscopes, they don't give you fine details of those processes because

the images produced by those microscopes are very very blurred.

And in modern microscopy you would like to recover those blurred details and see very

fine structures that are inside those cells.

And for that you need computers and you need clever algorithms.

So my work is studying such algorithms, developing new ones and understanding their mathematical properties.

The other example is imagine a car driving along a highway in an automatic mode.

So one task that car has to perform is to keep inside its own lane without chaotically

crossing the lane boundaries.

So I'm trying to teach computers to recognize those lane boundaries in all sorts of difficult

conditions such as bad weather, snow, rain, construction zones, etc.

And to make algorithms for lane detection very very robust.

FAU is a very strong university in the very center of Europe.

In my area of research which is signal processing and machine learning there is a strong tradition

here in particular the president of the university, he was himself, he is himself a researcher

in medical imaging field.

That's where we try to use clever algorithms for producing medical images and also analyzing

them automatically.

And there is a very, there is many very strong links between researchers at FAU and the industry.

For example Simmons is here and Simmons is very interested in all these things.

There are good opportunities for employment after you complete your studies at FAU.

Also Erlangen is a very pleasant and nice town to live in.

You can bike everywhere, you can go running or biking in the endless forests around, you

can go rock climbing and the Alps are nearby so you can go mountaineering or skiing.

I think it's a great place to be.
