My name is Stephanie Omola. I'm a professor of ethnology at the elite master program standards
of decision making across cultures and this belongs to the chair of Chinese studies at
FAO. I am an anthropologist and sinologist and I'm interested in local practices of
decision making in China and Taiwan. This is where I do my fieldwork and divination
there is a highly technical knowledge but also an everyday practice. For instance, people
consult diviners to choose the name of a newborn baby or if they want to invest in on the stock
market and I try in my work to understand the rationale of these techniques, why practitioners
spend so many years learning this very complex knowledge and what people gain from it. Students
should come to FAO to attend this special master program standards of decision making
across cultures that is sponsored by the elite network of Bavaria. It is an interdisciplinary
program that focuses on the cultural foundations of decision making in different cultures and
we have a special focus on East Asia and China and one of the highlights of the program is
a six month stay at Beijing University which is one of the most prestigious universities
in China and students can have the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in academic
and everyday situations in China.
