Language

Recent advances in Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated impressive cognitive abilities, but it remains unclear whether these models process language according to principles similar to those of the human brain. To bridge this gap, it is essential to investigate the underlying mechanisms of language processing in the brain. EEG studies are particularly valuable for this purpose because of their excellent temporal resolution, which allows researchers to observe the dynamic neural activations that occur during language processing.

Neurolinguistic research has traditionally used artificial speech stimuli to study how our brains process language, but is now shifting to using continuous natural speech, which more closely mirrors real-life communication. This shift allows researchers to collect richer, more relevant data. Using techniques from big data, artificial intelligence and corpus linguistics, we can now analyze this data more deeply and accurately

In this seminar we use electro-encephalography (EEG). This method is particularly well suited to neurolinguistic research. The major strength lies in the excellent temporal resolution, which allows researchers to follow brain activity in real time as speech and language is processed.

This seminar has been carefully designed with three key objectives in mind. First, we aim to deepen participants' understanding of neurolinguistics, going beyond the basics. Second, we will focus on the practical skills needed to measure and evaluate EEG data. Third, we emphasize the importance of translating this data into actionable insights that advance the frontiers of science. In essence, our seminar reflects the holistic scientific process, offering a concentrated snapshot of the journey from research to discovery.

The seminar will begin with an instructive video lecture covering language processing in the brain, corpus linguistics, and the intricacies of EEG stimulation and analysis. Students will then design their own PsychoPy stimulation protocol. For practical application, students will perform their own EEG measurements (under guidance) using a pre-written stimulus to ensure accuracy and functionality. Following the measurement, students will engage in data evaluation, covering aspects such as filtering, ERP evaluation and frequency-following response. As a culmination of their research, each student will write A4-page paper following the IEEE style, which will also be shared on StudOn. The seminar will conclude with a conference-style poster presentation, where students will present their findings in a 2-minute short-talk based on their self-designed poster, followed by a 5-minute discussion, allowing for a comprehensive understanding of their research journey.

Tasks in the seminar:

  1. Watch video lectures
  2. Develop a PsychoPy stimulation protocol and upload it.
  3. Conduct own EEG measurements using a standardized stimulus under guidance.
  4. Evaluate data.
  5. Write a 4-page paper in IEEE format and upload the paper.
  6.  Prepare a poster and present the poster in 2 minutes.
